Harvested in Central America, roasted in Arizona!

The American Cowboy arose from the vaquero traditions of northern Mexico. Western pioneers encountered Mexican vaqueros (Spanish for “cowboys”) on ranches in Texas about 1820 and soon adopted their masterful skills and equipment, the use of lariat, saddle, spurs, and branding iron. With these skills 8 to 12 cowboys could handle a herd of up to 2,500 head of cows.

In the autumn these cowboys rounded up the cattle and branded those not already branded; in the winter they kept watch over the herd; and in the spring they selected the cattle ready for market and drove them to the nearest railroad town, often hundreds of miles away and it took a lot of strong coffee to keep them going!

In the late 1800s, the cowboys of southern Arizona rode the rough country near the border of Mexico. It was a land shaped by many peoples, long before fences and rail lines cut across the desert.

Ranchers pushed cattle through mesquite flats and along dry riverbeds. Border towns like Tombstone rose fast on grit and silver, filled with miners, lawmen, traders, and trail hands. Life was hard, the sun unforgiving, and the desert demanded respect from everyone who crossed it.

Before first light, a cowboy would set a pot over mesquite coals and boil his coffee strong and black. That brew carried him through long cattle drives, cold desert nights, and miles of open range under a wide Arizona sky.

This roast is a tribute to those borderland days. Bold. Steady. And strong enough for the long ride ahead.
