As I step into the vast yellow grassland, watching my footing and listening closely to the sounds around me to avoid rattlesnakes, I hear a loud whistle. Am I trespassing? Did I miss a sign? I look around slowly, expecting to see an upset farmer, but there is no one there. If I felt a trace of suspicion before, now I am certain that spirits from a distant past still guard these lands.
I introduce myself loudly, saying “Che, bo!” to the horse now watching me from afar. I take my picture and stare at him for a few minutes. Our souls say goodbye, and a sense of calm overtakes my earlier state of mind.
